GIVING WINGS TO HIS DREAMS

Like all his friends, a young Farhan, couldn’t help gazing at the fighters & helicopters that kept flying past his neighbourhood from the nearby Air force station. But unlike most of them, his fascination fuelled with his will power, made him dream about being one amongst them. And today, at 20 years of age, Farhan Majeed from Kashmir’s Awantipora, has earned himself the distinction of being Kashmir’s youngest commercial pilot. Farhan recently obtained a commercial pilot’s license from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Govt of India.  He fondly remembers how as a child he would ask his grandfather where the planes were heading, who would amusingly reply that they would land at their rooftop. Today, as he takes to the skies on his own, he silently acknowledges that the joke turned into a prayer which was answered.

Farhan’s father, Mr Abdul Majeed is a lecturer of mathematics while his mother Mrs Fahameeda Banoo is a teacher at the local Montaqui Higher Secondary School. With their humble resources    and   amongst      a society   which      discouraged venturing into new horizons, his parents were instrumental in supporting him financially and emotionally throughout his journey. Obtaining all information that he needed to become a pilot from online sources, Farhan joined Global Konnect Aviation Services Pvt Ltd in Uttarakhand right after passing his class 12th Board exams. After two years of extensive training & study, Farhan achieved his goal.

Hailing from Pulwama district, which is majorly affected by militancy, Farhan provides a different perspective for the local youth to set goals for themselves and work towards achieving them. He goes on to add that the Kashmiri youth has an immense potential in them. The need of the hour for them is to set their goals early and work hard towards achieving them.
