KHAN SAHEB

Due to the existence of the Shrine of Syed Saleh Khan the village is named as Khan Sabun. Khan Sabun is situated in District Badgam 33 Kms from Srinagar. It is said that the Shrine was at first constructed by a local devotee Abdul RahmanMatti. In 1943 the whole village was gutted in fire in which the Shrine also got damaged. Syed SalehKhan arrived in the village of khan Saheb during the reign of Sultan Nazuk Shah and made it his permanent abode. At the time of Syed’s arrival the place was a dense forest with deep ditches and a karewa which had a long cave at its bottom upto the present Shrine of Khan Saheb. Syed Salen Khan remained engrossed in meditation in the said cave upto his departure from this world. There is a spring adjacent to the Shrine which is known as Bud Shah Nag. The folk belief attributes the existence of the spring to the miracle of Khan Saheb. It is said that on his birth, 99 Saints came to see the new born baby and blessed him. His spiritual brilliance was evident from a very early age and his influential uncle kept no stone unturned to adopt him. However his father Ismail Saheb refused and left for Kashmir. He took his son along and a chance meeting with the famous Saint Baba Naseeb-ud-Din Gazi, changed Saleh Khan’s life. Every year the Shrine attracts huge gathering of devotees on 21stofJune.  Folk dancers (dambali meti) also throng the occasion who dance there.
