NACHNI ZIARAT

Peer Zaaman Shah, a man with spiritual powers, came from Multan about 70- 80 years ago to Nachni, nestled in the hills to the North of Bandipore. He settled here and later left for his heavenly abode. His brother came searching for him. On learning of his brother’s death, he entered the ground alive where he is believed to be still asleep looking after the Gujars and Bakkarwal deras who come to their grazing grounds every summer. It is said that the Peer does not like any structures around the Ziarat. Earlier attempts have either been blown away by winds or destroyed during heavy snow.

The annuals urs is attended by thousands of locals from Lolab and Bandipore and the men in uniform. The day brings together families from both sides of the mountain features with colour and joy all over. The deras of Gujjars andBakkarwals who move to the summer pastures around the Ziarat make food and halwa for the visitors. Army personnel contribute generously towards the upkeep of the Shrine which is appreciated by the locals.
