CHANGING TRENDS: NEW AGE FOLK-SINGERS

In this modern era, where people are moving towards Westernisation, there are few individuals who not only have modernised their cultural heritage but are in-sync with today’s world. This holds true for the new age folk-singers of Kashmir, who have brought laurels to the field of Music. Out of many emerging talents from Kashmir, few singers & musicians have gained tremendous fame in a short span. Credits to their talents which gave them a stage to accomplish and also the social media platforms which have maximised their reach to showcase their flairs.

Yawar Abdal, also known as the Tamanna boy, is an enthusiastic & vibrant musician from Kashmir. His uses a blend of legendary poets, like Mirza Ghalib & Amir Khusrow, in Kashmiri music to spread the mess  age of peace and harmony. A computer science graduate from Srinagar, who follows Sufi music to engrain hope amongst all.

Mohammad Muneem, is a Kashmiri poet and singer/ songwriter of contemporary music with ethnic sound. During his performances, he is known to carry Kashmir on stage using traditional musical instruments & the famous Kashmiri embroidery. He teaches Urdu poetry/song-writing at Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce and also conducts various poetry/song writing workshops.

Pragnya Wakhlu, a singer who is harmonising the traditional and contemporary music, uses a mix of Kashmiri and English to portray the beauty of Valley. She quit her corporate job and got into the musical world so as to explore the music in its true sense.

There are numerous names emerging each day as the Kashmiri youth has realised the quantum of talent in them and are looking for opportunities and platforms to perform, keeping their age-old traditions alive…
