KASHMIR WINTER GAMES : A CATALYST FOR PEACE AND PROSPERITY
The mention of Kashmir within a causal hobnob amongst a group of interlocutors, has an uncanny tendency to always underline & highlight the simmering tension, unrest and security challenges within the valley. An impartial scrutiny of the vivid conversation would generally reveal, that more than the magnitude and the expanse of the physical turmoil in the valley, it is the mindset of the population in general which exhibits the predilection and propensity towards the existence of a disturbed valley. It is as if, the mere definition of Kashmir is synonymous to instability and this very impression is beamed outside to the general public at large. In order to alter and rectify this distorted perception, the process of redemption could be based on the method of regressive analysis rather than progressive hit & trial. Meaning that idea of a prosperous Kashmir must be created first and than all resources be mustered to achieve the idea.
The definitive requirement which emerges is to unceasingly portray the macro positives & potential of Kashmir to the outside world. The scheme of things would require a well planned schedule of events with a wholesome “Trigger Event” witnessed at a global level to restore confidence and shape the mindset.
One immediate opportunity which the valley has to offer, is the possibility of hosting winter games. The magnitude at which it can be planned or executed is not just within the realms of imagination but a concrete plan of action already exists but at a rudimentary level. The first “Khelo India Winter Games” were organized last year in March 20 at Gulmarg and the second edition is due to unfold in February this year. The potential is enormous but what is required is to escalate this as a “Trigger Event” to springboard the idea of Kashmir which must have adequate visibility, both within the nation and internationally. The trade off would always remain between conducting the event at a regular scale, as was done in the previous year, or a mega impetus with the assistance of the Central Government could be provided to the event as a launchpad for attainment of a large than life spectacle.
As mentioned earlier, taking baby steps to transform the picture of Kashmir is fine, logical and understandable, but there has to be a massive catalyst based on the strength of Kashmir which shall catapult the image of the Valley and helps it transform. Analysis of the previous winter games would indicate that the completes potential of the event was not harnessed. Lack of advertisement, sponsors and coverage impeded the visibility. One doesn’t need to imagine or cerebrate too hard, just a glimpse of the standard and the manner in which Winter Olympics are conducted every other year would glean the expansive realms of possibility. Kashmir could be put back on the world map, and this time as a positive sports, tourism and eco destination. Security situation is bound to improve, once the potential is recognized as a winter sports destination. Once the ground work is laid domestically, international participation can be solicited. The boost to tourism, the generations of employment and more importantly the image of Kashmir will be given a facelift. This will be also a major setback to the inimical designs of the enemy to create adverse conditions in the valley.
The writing is on the wall, the opportunity is there for the taking, all that is left to achieve is to bolster the purview and scope of these winter games by infusing the correct amount of finance and rigorous Perceptions Management at the macro level. The rest will follow and the idea itself will form the catalyst to make the engine perform like a well oiled machine.
